Pickleball is a Combination of What Three Sports?

Pickleball is the combination of the components of 3 different sports:

  1. Badminton
  2. Tennis
  3. Ping Pong

Tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, three of the most popular sports in the world, were first combined in 1958 when a man named Bill Bell invented the game. Pickleball, as it is now known, involves two paddles (comparable to tennis racquets) and a ball, which looks a lot like a small wiffle ball. Though the game can be played on a court or just anywhere outside, the preferred surface is a badminton court.

History: Pickleball was invented in 1958

Pickleball was invented by father-and-son Bill and Harry Bell. Bill was an avid tennis player who golfed, played handball, and practiced badminton. Bill’s retired father, Harry, was a sports enthusiast who played basketball, tennis, badminton, and pickleball. They came up with the idea to combine paddles, balls, and tennis rules into a sport that could be played indoors, outdoors, and year-round.

What are Pickleball’s Similarities with Badminton?

Badminton is one of the world’s most popular games, and it’s also one of the most accessible sports. Pickleball has hard plastic or composite paddle (most of the pickleball paddles uses carbon fiber) and the same stringing (different materials) like tennis, with the same racquets, net, and court requirements. Pickleball has a 36-inch diameter court, but badminton uses larger courts. The net is lowered to 9ft for pickleball.

What are the Similarities with Tennis?

Tennis is a sport that is not only popular and played around the world but has also been played for thousands of years. The game involves hitting a ball back and forth between players using rackets.

Unlike tennis, pickleball can be played by a wide range of age groups, with adults enjoying the most success. Pickleball is played with a perforated plastic ball, which makes it easy to learn. What makes it so fun is that it’s played on a smaller court and players use paddles, not hands or feet, to hit the ball back and forth.  Like its cousin tennis, pickleball is a game played between two teams of four players. In pickleball, players use a paddle made of wood or composite plastic to hit a hollow plastic ball over a net. The sport is a hybrid of tennis, table tennis, and badminton; the paddles have larger holes than tennis balls, like a ping pong ball, while the badminton-sized net and court design are reminiscent of table tennis.
